Gareth Trott (1993 - )

Gareth Trott is a composer, conductor, teacher, and euphonium player from Pembrokeshire, South-West Wales. He began his musical journey in the brass band movement, rising from the 4th Section to the Championship Section with the youthful and ambitious Goodwick Brass Band, gaining early success in competitions.

Gareth developed a strong passion for both performance and composition. He studied for a BMus in Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (2012–2016), receiving tuition from euphonium virtuoso David Childs and studying brass band performance under Dr. Robert Childs.

In 2017, Gareth joined the British Army, becoming Solo Euphonium with the Band of the Irish Guards, part of the Household Division and currently works as a musician in the Band and the Welsh Guards. Alongside this role, he was appointed Euphonium Tutor for the London College of Music and continues to teach within both the British Army and the wider London area.

His military career has taken him around the world, performing at major international events and state occasions, including the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the first UK visit of President Donald Trump, the BBC Festival of Remembrance (alongside Tom Jones and Bryn Terfel), the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the Coronation and Proclamation of King Charles III. Gareth has performed in countries including the USA, Australia, France, Belgium, Germany, and Gibraltar. His music has become a staple within the British Army repertoire, and he now serves as a Staff Arranger for the Household Division.

A highlight of his military compositional work was writing the first quick march for King Charles III, Welsh Diadem, composed for the King’s first Birthday Parade.

As a brass band composer, Gareth came to wider attention in 2021 when Grimethorpe Colliery Band performed his six-movement suite Eastern Horizons at Brass in Concert. He is currently Resident Composer with the Tongwynlais Temperance Band, for whom he has written both concert and competition works. His compositions have also been performed by Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Desford Colliery Band, Lewis Merthyr Band, and the Band of the Welsh Guards, among others.

Gareth continues to build a diverse portfolio of compositions, ranging from programmatic and serious concert works to accessible and engaging pieces for brass and wind bands.

Gareth has just been accepted onto the Bandmasters course in which he enrols in September, and will soon be a conductor in British Army Music.
