Christopher Houlding

Since graduating from London’s Guildhall School of Music & Drama in 1980, Chris has played the trombone with most of the UK’s leading ensembles and under many of the world’s greatest conductors. Recently awarded an MMus in Conducting from the Royal Northern College of Music, studying with Mark Elder, Gianandrea Noseda and Martyn Brabbins, Chris is now widening his conducting horizons to include opera, symphonic, contemporary and chamber music. Recent conducting engagements have taken him to Oslo and Aarhus.

As regular Trombone Professor with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, he often coaches orchestral brass sections including the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Gustav Mahler Jungend Orchester. Chris is keen to maintain his connections with the world of brass bands and regularly conducts Grimethorpe Colliery Band, RNCM Brass Band (2007-09 Festival of Brass), brass bands throughout Denmark, Norway and Sweden and DUT Yorkshire Imperial Band with whom he has recorded for Radio and CD and won the First Section National Brass Band Championship.

As Professor of Trombone and Brass Ensemble at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen, Germany and Senior Tutor in Brass at Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music for the past fifteen years he regularly directs ensembles at the RNCM and at the city’s renowned specialist school, Chetham’s School of Music. As an established teacher and adjudicator, Chris has given recitals and masterclasses all over the UK and the USA and other international venues.

Still active as a professional trombonist, he has appeared as Guest Principal with all the London orchestras, London Brass and has represented the UK in the World Orchestra for Peace under Valery Gergiev. He has also recently appeared as soloist with the Durham Sinfonia (Bourgeois Concerto) and the Orchestra of Opera North directed by the composer in Elgar Howarth’s Trombone Concerto on the occasion of the composer’s 70th birthday. In 2008, Chris released his first solo CD, 'Houlding His Own', which features standard trombone repertoire such as the sonatas by Hindemith and Sulek along with other, less familiar, repertoire for trombone alone and with piano. A former president of the British Trombone Society, International Clinician for the Edwards Instrument Company and Vice Chair of the International Trombone Association Executive Board, Chris is dedicated to encouraging musical progress throughout the world.
